Squeegees are an important part of the cleaning arsenal. They make keeping floors dry and safe, quick, and easy. But like everything else in your operation, you need to carefully consider the type of squeegee you get to ensure you get the right one to maximise the benefits it offers and get a good return on your investment.

What is a Vikan Squeegee?

Vikan squeegees are a type of high-quality squeegee designed hygienically to remove liquids, residues, or debris from floors, tables, walls, and other surfaces. Vikan is a Danish company renowned for its professional-grade cleaning systems. The squeegees have established a reputation in various industries, including commercial kitchens, food and beverage processing, cleanrooms, and pharmaceutical companies worldwide.

Types of Vikan Squeegees

After considering the reasons why you should purchase Vikan squeegees for your operations, your next step is to examine the different types available and select the right one based on your needs and requirements. Some of the options we have include the following:

Floor Squeegees

Floor squeegees are mainly used for removing water and food residues from smooth or rough floors in food processing areas and other industrial fields, including commercial kitchens. They come in different options to suit different applications and types of floor surfaces. The options available include the following:

Single-blade squeegees: Single-blade Vikan squeegees are designed for ultimate cleaning results. They can be used on floors and in food production areas. The blade is EU food contact compliant and has no seams or cracks, reducing contamination and ensuring that bacteria cannot hide.
Single-blade squeegees are effective in moving wet and dry soils. The unique design of the squeegees allows them to reach into corners easily. They are also easy to clean and are dishwasher safe, making them ideal for busy environments.
Double-blade foam rubber: Double-blade foam rubber squeegees come in various colours, including white and black. The white options are food contact compliant and are ideal for moving liquids from floors and surfaces. The white options are also removable for easier replacement and cleaning.
The black options are highly effective when moving large amounts of liquid on smooth and tiled floor surfaces. The rubber is soft, making it easy to reach into tight spaces on the floors, including grout lines. However, they are not EU food contact compliant.
Foam blade squeegees: These squeegees are designed for use on delicate floors. They absorb a lot more liquid with less effort, making them ideal for applications that require maintaining dry floors for safety.

Handheld Squeegees

These are also known as bench squeegees, and they can be used to clean tables, benches, countertops, and conveyors, as well as other surfaces and equipment in the facility. They are smaller than the floor squeegees and typically have a different design. The most common places and applications for handheld squeegees include bakeries, dairies, butcher shops, and food preparation services, among others.

Stainless Steel Squeegees

These are a type of special-purpose squeegee reserved for heavy-duty industrial cleaning in areas that require high chemical and heat resistance, such as clean rooms, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and meat processing.

Some of the stainless steel squeegee options come with a replaceable cassette for easy swapping of the blades when they are worn out and no longer functioning properly.

Cartridge Squeegees

The cartridge or cassette squeegees have replaceable blades. They are ideal for sustainable and long-term use in high-frequency environments. The squeegees allow you to save on replacement costs by replacing only the worn-out blade with a new one rather than the entire squeegee.

What to Consider When Buying a Vikan Squeegee

Choosing the right Vikan squeegee requires careful consideration of various factors, which include the ones listed below:

Type of Surface

The first thing you want to consider when buying a squeegee is the type of the surface you want to use it on to ensure you get the best results. For a smooth floor, a single blade squeegee is the best option, for rough floors, double-blade squeegees are the best option and for tables or other surfaces in narrow spaces, you can use the handheld squeegees.

Liquid Volume

You also need to consider the amount of liquid you need to move. Some squeegees work better with less volumes of liquid, while others work better with more. If you’re handling light spills, opt for a single-blade squeegee, while foam or double-blade squeegees are best suited for heavy spills.

Hygiene Levels

The level of hygiene in your operation also determines the type of squeegee you can get. For the highest level of hygiene, opt for single-blade options. You should also consider options that are dishwasher- and autoclave-safe for maximum sterilisation and easy cleaning to avoid contamination of the surfaces.

Blade

When considering the blade of the squeegee, consider both its flexibility and the material used for the blade. Flexible blades are ideal for uneven surfaces, while rigid options are best suited for heavy-duty applications and flat, smooth surfaces.

The squeegee blade can be made from different materials, including TPE rubber for soft and flexible blades, foam for absorbent blades, silicone for heat-resistant blades and stainless steel for heavy-duty applications. Picking the right materials for the blades ensures you get the best performance and results from the squeegee.

Handle Compatibility

It is essential to select a Vikan squeegee with an ergonomic handle for enhanced comfort and reach, particularly when your staff will be using the squeegee for extended periods. Choosing the right handle makes the squeegee easy to use and reduces fatigue.

Colour Coding

One of the factors that makes Vikan squeegees unique is that they come in different colours, which makes colour coding and segregation easier. You can choose from a wide range of squeegee colours to prevent cross-contamination and ensure that you only use the right colour of squeegee in its designated area.

Onit Direct offers an extensive range of squeegee options to suit your specific needs and requirements.
