Scrapers are an unlikely cleaning tool, but they come in handy when your work environment involves dirt and grime that is stuck to surfaces. In some cases, scrapers can also be used for cutting and dividing ingredients, such as dough, in the baking industry.

There are various types of scrapers available in the industry, and Onit Direct stocks a wide range of them, catering to your specific needs. Our selection of scrapers includes options made from various materials, including plastic and metal, to suit different applications.

What is a Scraper?

Scrapers are hand tools with a sharp-edged blade and an ergonomic handle. They are designed to remove unwanted materials from various surfaces to make cleaning easier. The scraper can be used on various surfaces to clean, smooth, or shape materials such as wood.

A typical scraper can remove paint, rust, grime, and stuck-on dirt. Scrapers are widely used in various industries, including construction, manufacturing, automotive, and commercial kitchens and restaurants, as well as other areas where material removal is required. They come in different shapes and sizes to cater to specific tasks and requirements.

Types of Scrapers

There’s a wide range of scrapers available, varying depending on what you’re looking for. Some of the types of scrapers we have at Onit Direct include the following:

Handheld Scrapers

This is the most common type of scraper. It is available in short and long handles and is commonly used for manual removal tasks and for close-up applications. The scraper is fitted with a vertical blade and handle and is used for small-scale tasks such as surface cleaning and removing grime and dirt. Handheld scrapers can also be used for paint removal and removing adhesives.

Bench Scrapers

These are also known as dough scrapers because they are extensively used in the baking industry and for culinary applications. They are used to handle and cut dough, as well as to clean the workbenches after the cooking applications are complete. But they are not only limited to kitchen work. They can also be used in other scraping tasks.

Floor Scrapers

These are heavy-duty scrapers fitted with a broader blade and a strong handle to remove stubborn materials, such as adhesive or carpet, from the floor. Some options come with long handles to provide the user with leverage and have blades that can withstand significant force. A floor scraper is ideal for heavy-duty floor renovation and other applications that require significant force to break through the surface dirt.

For durability and cost-effectiveness, consider opting for floor scrapers that feature a replaceable blade. This ensures that you always work with a sharp blade that can cut through the dirt with ease.

Heavy-duty Scrapers

These are industrial scrapers that feature larger blades and are primarily used in construction and mining. They can handle significant amounts of material removal such as earthmoving, excavation and levelling. These are not the typical handheld scrapers but pull-type scrapers that are fitted to a machine.

Plastic and Metal Scrapers

The blade of the scraper can be made from plastic or metallic materials. The type of materials determines where the scraper can be used. Plastic scrapers are safe for non-stick surfaces and soft materials that can easily get scratched. There are also plastic scrapers that are safe for food applications and are commonly used in food processing facilities and laboratories. These do not scratch delicate surfaces and can be used in a wide range of settings.

Metal scrapers are made from strong and durable materials such as stainless steel and aluminium. They are designed for hardened residue and thick build-up on strong surfaces. Some types of metal scrapers may have replaceable blades, making it easier to operate the scraper for a longer period without losing its effectiveness.

Speciality Scrapers

In addition to the normal scrapers, there are also other types of scrapers designed for more specific tasks. These include ice scrapers for windshields, gasket scrapers for automotive work and wallpaper scrapers, among others.

These range of scrapers are designed for specific tasks in different industries and fields and often have a different range of features and construction to suit the specific task in question.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Scraper

As simple as a scraper is, choosing the wrong one can have catastrophic effects on the task at hand and can lead to damage to more expensive equipment or tabletops. Here are some key factors to consider when purchasing a scraper to ensure you select the right one.

Task Requirements

Before buying the scraper, you need to identify the tasks you need the scraper for. Different scrapers have different features that are designed for various materials and applications. Delicate surfaces require different types of scrapers than hard surfaces.

The type of surface and the nature of the task will inform you whether you should opt for a metal or plastic scraper, as well as the size of the scraper, among other key features.

Size and Capacity

You will also need to consider the scale of the job site and your project, as well as the amount of material or dirt you want to remove. Heavy-duty applications require larger and sturdier scrapers, while smaller tasks can be handled with handheld or bench scrapers.

Additional Features

You may also want to consider a scraper with additional features, such as retractable or replaceable blades and lightweight options. The nature and type of additional features you choose are determined by the circumstances of the task at hand. Choosing a scraper with these additional features makes it easier and more effective to use. However, to enjoy these benefits, you must pick the right scraper with the right features.

Scrapers are versatile tools that can be used across different industries and tasks. But they can also be specialised to the task at hand. At Onit Direct, we offer a wide range of scrapers that make it easy to select the right one for your application, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness.
