Stillages are the most widely used packaging material in the world. They are used to store, transport and display products in various industries. In fact, it is estimated that over 80% of all products sold in the United Kingdom are stillage packaged.

Initially, stillages were made of wood, though you can still find some wooden stillages (pallets). But with Onit Direct, our stillages are purely made of metal to combat the different weight issues in different aspects. We also listen to our client’s needs and work on meeting them.

So, stillages are commonly used in warehouses and distribution centres to store boxes, cartons or other products. The stillage often uses rollers to move the items from one location to another. A forklift can be used to move items on and off the stillage, but it is usually not required because of the low weight of the items being stored.

Types of Stillages

There are different types of stillages that you can use for your business. It is important to pick the right one based on your needs and requirements.

The type of material used in making a stillage is also an important factor to consider. For example, if you need a stillage for storing chemicals, then it must be made of a material that will not react with the chemicals stored inside it. It should be durable and long-lasting as well.

So, there are many stillages available, here are, however, the most common ones:

Mobile stillages

These are used for moving heavy materials over long distances. They can be transported by forklifts or other vehicles through the use of forklift pockets, pallets or other methods. Mobile stillages can be used for both short-term storage and long-term storage, depending on the user’s needs. They can also be used as part of a racking system to store boxes or pallets.

Some examples of mobile stillages are:

Profile Stillages: These come in various sizes, depending on the size of the load you are transporting. They can be made from steel or aluminium and can be transported on a trailer or flatbed truck. Profile stillages are available in both low-sided and high-sided versions, depending on your requirements

Specialist Vehicle Packaging Stillages

Specialist vehicle packages are designed to fit specific size vehicles, such as containers and flatbeds, allowing operators to stack goods in various ways. In addition, these stillages can be used with other equipment, such as conventional lifts or cranes, allowing operators to create any configuration required.

Stationary stillage

These are installed at a specific location and are not moved often. This type of stillage can be built on top of platforms or concrete slabs to provide additional support and stability for the load being supported by it. These have a number of compartments which can be locked with padlocks to prevent theft and pilferage of goods. So, stationary stillages are generally available in different sizes according to the requirement of customers.

Some examples of stationary stillages are:

Cages & Bins: They are used for storing packaged goods in retail stores, warehouses and factories. They come in different sizes, shapes and materials, so there will be no order too big or small for them to handle. In addition, cages & bins come equipped with locking doors, so your items will always be safe within them, even when stacked on top of one another!

Modular stillage

These units come in various shapes and sizes depending on their usage, but they all have one thing in common; they consist of several parts that can be easily assembled together to create whatever type of structure is needed. This makes them very popular among industries as they can be customised according to the needs of each industry individually without compromising on quality or performance!

Examples of the modular stillages are:

Post pallet stillages
Small & Medium heavy duty stillages

Benefits of Stillages

One of the key benefits of stillages is that they can be made to fit your needs. Here are many other benefits of using them:

Improved Safety

The main benefit of using stillages is that they improve the safety of your employees and other workers. With a safe working environment, you can reduce the risks associated with lifting heavy materials and also protect your employees from any injuries that can happen while lifting or moving heavy materials.

Eased Mobility & Handling

A stillage will also make it much easier to move around and handle heavy items. This is especially true if you have to move them often, as they are much lighter than what they would be if they were not organised properly. You will also be able to see all of your tools at once instead of searching through piles of boxes or shelves, trying to find what you need. This makes it quick and easy to grab exactly what you need when something goes wrong with your equipment, whether it’s small or large repairs that need to be made.

Stacking

Stillages have a unique design that allows them to be stacked on top of each other, depending on the height needed for storage. The shelves are designed in such a way that they do not occupy too much space when stacked. This makes it easy to organise items in an efficient manner and also helps reduce waste by giving you more room for stacking more products on top of each other.

What to Consider When Buying Stillages

Here are some things to consider when buying stillages:

Materials

Stillages are available in different materials such as wood, metal, plastic or even cardboard. The material you choose should depend on your product and how much weight it can support. For example, wooden stillages tend to be more flexible than metal ones, but they don’t last as long.

Design

The design of your stillage will depend on its intended use. For example, if you’re using a stillage for storage purposes, you might want one with shelves so that you can store multiple products without worrying about them falling off the shelving units. If you’re using it for transport purposes, then perhaps you’ll need one without shelves (unless they’re designed for storage).

Durability

Most people want to invest in products that will last them a long time, so durability is important when it comes to purchasing stillages. You want one that will be able to withstand any kind of abuse without breaking down or losing its shape. If your company manufactures wine or beer, you may want to look at stainless steel stillages because these are built with strength and durability in mind.

FAQs

What are stillages used for in the food industry?

Stillages are used for storing and transporting bulk food products, ingredients, crates and packaging materials in food factories, warehouses and distribution centres. They help keep stock stable, organised and easy to move through production and logistics areas.

Are stillages suitable for food manufacturing and storage environments?

Yes. Stillages are widely used in food environments because they are strong, durable and designed for heavy-duty handling. They are suitable for storing goods in ambient, chilled and frozen supply chains.

How do stillages improve efficiency in food warehouse operations?

Stillages allow large quantities of goods to be handled as a single unit, reducing manual handling and improving workflow. This makes loading, unloading and stock movement faster and more efficient in busy food distribution environments.

What should I consider when choosing stillages for a food business?

Consider load capacity, stackability, size compatibility and material finish. In food environments, it’s also important to choose stillages that are easy to clean, corrosion-resistant where needed and suitable for repeated daily use.
