Shelves are a go-to storage solution for commercial spaces because they are easy to incorporate
into almost any space and take advantage of vertical space, allowing businesses to save on floor
space.

With shelf bins, you can maximise the benefits of shelves by having bins designed to fit into
those shelf spaces, providing easier access, better storage, and organisation without a
significant additional investment.

We have a wide selection of shelf bins for your operations that help you make the most of the
shelving you already have in place. You just need to pick the right shelf bin sizes and designs
depending on your needs and the size of your shelves.

Feature Considerations When Buying Shelf Bins

The idea behind shelf bins is relatively simple, and it doesn’t seem like there is much to
consider when buying them. However, failing to account for these features can affect the
performance and effectiveness of the bins in your operations. Some of the factors you should
consider include the following:

Size

Choosing the Right Dimensions

Size is one of the first things to consider, and it’s not just about how much space the bin takes
up, but also about how well it matches the items you’re storing.

Smaller bins are ideal for screws, connectors, and small components, where keeping items separated
is important, while larger bins work better for bulkier items or higher quantities. However, they
can make smaller items harder to manage if used incorrectly.

Working with Your Shelving

It’s also important to think about how the bins fit on your shelves. The depth, width, and height
should align with your shelving system to ensure you make the most of the available space.

A well-fitted bin setup will look neater and will work more efficiently than one where bins are
too large or too small for the space.

Material Used

Durability Matters

Shelf bins are usually made from durable materials that can easily handle regular use, occasional
knocks, and the weight of stored items without cracking or warping.

Choosing a strong, durable material helps ensure the bins last longer and continue to perform
well over time.

Suitability for Your Environment

Depending on where the bins are being used, you may also need to consider resistance to moisture,
dust, or certain substances. Some environments are more demanding than others, and the material
should reflect that.

Load Rating and Structural Integrity

Understanding Weight Limits

Every bin has a load rating indicating how much weight it can safely hold. This is an important
factor that’s often overlooked.

If bins are overloaded, they can become difficult to handle or may even fail over time. Matching
the load rating to your typical use helps avoid these issues.

Maintaining Shape and Stability

Structural integrity isn’t just about weight. It’s also about how well the bin holds its shape
when filled or stacked. A well-designed bin stays stable and easy to use, even when it’s carrying
heavier items.

Additional Features

Dividers for Organisation

Some shelf bins come with internal dividers that let you separate items within the same bin. This
is particularly useful for very small components that might otherwise get mixed together. Dividers
add flexibility and help keep everything neatly organised.

Lids for Protection

While open-front bins are great for access, lids can be useful in certain situations. They help
protect contents from dust or debris and can be useful for items that don’t need constant access.
It’s worth considering whether you need open access, covered storage, or a mix of both.

Labelling Systems

Labelling is one of the simplest ways to improve organisation, but it’s often underestimated.
Bins with built-in label holders or flat surfaces for labels make it much easier to identify
contents at a glance. This becomes especially important in larger setups where multiple people
need to access the bins.

Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Shelf Bins Online

Buying shelf bins online is convenient, but it’s easy to make mistakes that can lead to
frustration and disappointment later. Knowing what to watch out for can save time and effort.

Trusting Photos for Size

Images Can Be Misleading

Product images don’t always give a clear sense of scale. A bin might look larger or smaller than
it actually is, depending on how it’s photographed. Relying on images alone can lead to bins that
don’t fit your shelves or don’t hold as much as you expected.

Check Measurements Carefully

Always look at the dimensions provided and compare them with your shelving space. Taking a few
minutes to measure properly can prevent problems later.

Forgetting How Much the Bin Holds

Capacity Matters

It’s easy to focus on the bin’s physical size and overlook how much it can actually hold.
Capacity isn’t just about dimensions, but also about usable space and the durability of the
material. A bin that looks large may not hold as much as you think if the shape or design limits
how items fit inside.

Match Capacity to Usage

Think about how often the bin will be used and how quickly it will fill up. Choosing the right
capacity helps avoid constant refilling or overcrowding.

Skipping the Load Rating

Overloading Risks

Ignoring the load rating can result in bins that struggle to handle the weight of your items. This
can affect both durability and usability. Overloaded bins can become difficult to handle and may
wear out more quickly.

Choose for Your Actual Needs

It’s always better to choose a bin that can comfortably handle your typical load rather than
pushing it to its limits.

Mixing Brands That Do Not Match

Inconsistent Sizing

Not all bins are designed to work together, even if they look similar. Mixing brands can lead to
inconsistencies in size, fit, and stacking ability. This can make your storage system feel uneven
or less organised.

Stick to a Compatible System

Choosing bins from the same range or ensuring compatibility helps create a more consistent and
functional setup.

Buying for Current Needs Only

Planning Ahead

It’s tempting to buy bins based on what you need right now, but storage requirements often change
over time. Stock levels can increase, new items may be introduced, and workflows can evolve.

Allow Room for Growth

Choosing a system that can be expanded or adapted later helps future-proof your storage and avoids
the need for a complete overhaul down the line.

A Simple Solution That Works

Shelf bins are a straightforward way to bring order to shelving, but their impact can be
significant. They make it easier to organise items, improve visibility, and support more efficient
workflows without adding unnecessary complexity.

At Onit Direct, the focus is on practical storage solutions that work in real environments. Shelf
bins fit that approach perfectly. They’re simple, adaptable, and built to handle everyday use.

FAQs

What are shelf bins used for in the food industry?

Shelf bins are used to organise small components, ingredients and packaging items in commercial kitchens, food factories and warehouses. They help keep workspaces tidy and make it easier for staff to quickly locate and access frequently used items.

How do shelf bins improve efficiency in food preparation areas?

By grouping items into clearly labelled sections, shelf bins reduce time spent searching for ingredients or supplies. This supports faster workflows, better stock control and improved organisation in busy food production environments.

Are shelf bins suitable for storing food ingredients?

Yes, many shelf bins are suitable for storing dry, non-perishable food ingredients such as spices, grains, sachets and baking supplies. In food environments, it’s important to choose bins made from food-safe materials where direct contact with ingredients is required.

What should I consider when choosing shelf bins for a food business?

Consider bin size, durability, labelling options and whether they are food-safe. In commercial kitchens and food factories, it’s also important to choose shelf bins that are easy to clean and compatible with existing racking or storage systems.
