Platform trolleys are the backbone of any operation that relies on moving a large volume of heavy items on a daily basis. They are the workhorse that could keep things moving along swiftly without overexerting your employees and enhancing your efficiency.

Platform trolleys are a type of material-handling equipment designed for carrying loads. They have handles connected by a metal frame and four wheels attached to the base. The trolleys are made from durable materials like steel or aluminium to ensure they can withstand the demanding commercial applications for which they are built.

The design of the platform trolley can vary depending on the type of load it is designed to carry. Some options are designed for heavy-duty applications, while others are designed to handle light loads but in high volume.

If you’re looking to improve your material handling capacity while reducing manual labour and reliance on expensive equipment such as forklifts, you should consider adding platform trolleys.

Types of Platform Trolleys Available

Platform trolleys come in different shapes and sizes designed to handle different types of materials. Picking the right type is crucial when choosing a platform trolley for your facility because it determines how efficiently it can handle the materials and positively impact your operations.

Some common types of platform trolleys include:

Nesting Platform Trolleys

Nesting platform trolleys have the added advantage of saving space when not in use. The trolleys can be nested together to take up minimal space, allowing you to have more room to work. Nesting platform trolleys are suitable for facilities where space is a premium.

Besides the nesting features, these trolleys feature a large flatbed suitable for heavy and bulky goods. They can be fitted with a rear basket or a top shelf for smaller items. Heavy-duty models are available for more demanding applications.

Flatbed Platform Trolleys

Unlike nestable platform trolleys that also feature a flatbed, flatbed platform trolleys cannot be nested when not in use. They have a wide platform that is suited for moving heavy and bulky goods and can also be used to stack goods when you want to move them in larger quantities. The large surface area of the flatbed trolley makes it ideal for supporting considerable weight.

The trolley also has swivel wheels that make it easy to manoeuvre the trolley even when it is fully loaded. Depending on the material you want to carry, you can choose from several material options for the flatbed.

Turntable Trucks

Turntable trucks have a similar overall design to flatbed trolleys. However, they offer extra manoeuvrability because of the additional independent steering axle. They are perfect for moving loads in difficult or tight environments and when fully loaded with goods.

The trolleys have drop-down sides that offer easy loading and unloading and additional features that allow the trolley to be hauled over longer distances using equipment such as quad bikes to make transportation easier.

Order picking Trolleys

Order-picking trolleys can move different products quickly and simultaneously. They are commonly used in warehouses and other order-picking environments to boost productivity and reduce unnecessary trips back and forth by allowing employees to carry more items on each trip using the trolley.

Some of the trolleys in this category have shelves that can be used with picking bins, ensuring you can keep the different items isolated and increasing efficiency and accuracy in your order-picking operations.

Applications of Platform Trolleys

What makes platform trolleys an excellent choice is their versatility. They have applications across various industries and for different functions. You just need to find the right one for your applications. Some of the industries that can benefit from platform trolleys include:

Logistics and Warehousing:

Materials Handling: Warehouses can use platform trolleys to move materials and loads within the warehouse. The trolleys can help improve efficiency and smooth the flow of materials and loads within the warehouse.
Loading and unloading: Some types of platform trolleys, like flatbed trolleys, can be used to load and unload cargo within the warehouse. The trolleys can move significant amounts of material at a time, which can help shorten loading and unloading times.
Order picking: Platform trolleys can enhance efficiency in picking items correctly. You have to choose the right trolley to help create a more ergonomic and efficient environment by reducing excessive carrying and lifting.
Heavy-duty applications: If your facility handles heavy items, you can opt for platform trolleys with reinforced frames and platforms to move the heavyweights. Platform trolleys can help move oversized materials in large volumes for safer and more efficient operations.

Retail and commercial spaces:

Merchandise handling: Platform trolleys can be used in retail and commercial places to manage merchandise within the premises. They can also be used to restock and arrange the displays and shelves.
Customer assistance: The trolleys can be used to help clients buy big appliances to carry them to their vehicles, improving the shopping experience and saving customers from the trouble of having to carry the items themselves.

Features to Consider When Buying Platform Trolleys

Seeing that platform trolleys will play a significant part in your business operations. It makes sense that you will want to pick the best and most practical one for your operations. To help you in this selection, we have highlighted a few options you should consider:

Load Capacity

Different types of platform trolleys have different types of load capacity. They are constructed to have various load capacities, and they can handle the weight of different materials. When choosing a platform trolley, you should ensure you pick one that is capable of handling your weight requirement. If possible, always go for a trolley with a higher weight limit.

Material and construction

Platform trolleys are made from different materials, including steel and aluminium. The right material will depend on the operating environment and other applications, such as whether you need to transport the trolley often to assist with offloading or loading.

Materials like aluminium are lightweight, which makes them more suitable if you have to move the platform trolley more frequently.

When considering the material, you should also consider the materials used to make the wheels. For the wheels, you will need to consider the nature of the floor and choose something suitable for the type and nature of the floor that you have.

Consider design

For facilities that have limited space or where you will need to transport the trolleys back on return trips, you may want to consider compact and foldable options for convenience and to save space while in storage. This will make it suitable for limited space areas. If such requirements are necessary for your operations, you should consider the design.

Other features, such as adjustable handles, should also be considered if your workers will be using the trolleys for an extended period. Adjustable handles allow you to adjust the height for ergonomic reasons and to make the trolley more comfortable for the user.

Some trolleys also come with additional features, such as braking systems, for additional safety, which may be considered depending on the applications and the nature of the environment where the trolley will be used.
