A pick wall or put wall is essential in a warehouse system. It helps streamline order fulfilment by using a wall of boxes where workers can place picked items for individual customer orders. The purpose of the pick wall is to improve the efficiency and accuracy of your system.

With a pick wall, you can optimise order picking, processing, and packing by consolidating items into individual orders after they’ve been picked from various locations in the warehouse. The pick wall system comprises a wall with euro sized picking bins, usually in a 400x300mm, 600x400mm or 800x600mm footpring., each designated for a specific customer order or a batch of orders.

Pick walls are used to store products such as clothing, electronic parts, books, in fact any SKU that needs picking for dispatch within a distribution environment.

Once all items for an order are in the designated compartment, the order is ready for packing and shipping. The pick wall might be a simple structure without much technology, but it can substantially improve your efficiency, speed, and accuracy in processing customer orders.

Benefits of Using a Pick Wall

Some of the benefits of a pick wall include the following:

Increased efficiency

Order picking requires your team to move about the warehouse, looking for individual inventory items. They manually record the products picked and update the inventory. The picker looks for every unit required in a single order at a time and repeats the same process for each order until all orders are filled.

This often means the picker makes numerous redundant trips to the same warehouse isles for different orders.

The process is slightly different with a pick wall. The picker walks to a specific pick wall location where all parts are stored. This process eliminates redundancy and allows pickers to work faster by picking one order at a time.

Additionally, the pick wall or put wall system can be enhanced to allow workers to quickly identify, sort, and pack multiple orders at a time, improving speed, efficiency, and accuracy.

Improved Accuracy

Using open-fronted picking bins in a pick wall formation can eliminate costly errors. Operators are able to pick items accurately because products are stored in their own individual pick bin locations.

Augment productivity

Tediously fulfilling individual customer orders one at a time is not productive. When the orders are filled faster and more accurately, the warehouse is more productive, and you can take on more orders without expanding your team. Time is not wasted walking around the same isles multiple times and updating the same inventory records.

You also save time spent correcting order mistakes or understanding what caused certain inventory errors. Using a pick wall allows workers to focus on picking and packing more orders instead of redoing the same order. Real-time inventory updates from the system also help warehouse managers identify inefficiencies in the order fulfilment process and give them data to make better decisions for the warehouse.

Scale Operations

Many industries face challenges connected to fluctuations in demand, such as seasonal demand and supply chain issues. Solutions to these challenges require your warehouse to be flexible with your output and to scale your operations accordingly. However, manual warehouse management isn’t very scalable without incurring higher labour and material costs.

With a pick wall system, your warehouse can reduce or expand its operations as necessary. This allows your company to adapt to the changing customer demand, service volumes and growth operations without facing the exact labour requirements.

A pick wall system requires little or no labour compared to traditional racking systems, which can be costly and time-consuming to install.

Cost reduction

The efficiency, accuracy and increased productivity benefits of using a pick wall system can help you cut costs in your operations. You will also cut costs because of fewer inventory errors, reduced order inaccuracies, and lower labour needs.

Accurate orders can result in lower rates of return, which can be costly. Also, having an efficient inventory means you need less space for inventory storage. You can free up room on the warehouse floor and delay costly expansions, allowing you to reap the benefits of automation without sacrificing a huge portion of your warehouse budget.

Types of Pick Wall Systems

Once you decide to go with a pick wall system, there are other adjustments you can make to help you increase the productivity, efficiency and accuracy of the system and your workers. These are called pick-assist technologies. They work by guiding the picker to specific compartments or cubes. They eliminate confusion and increase accuracy. Some of the options you can consider include the following:

Pick-to-Light (PTL)

The PTL system uses light to give your picker a visual cue on where to head next. These visual cues indicate which compartments should receive products and which orders are ready for packing. PTL technology is standard with pick wall applications, but the installation can be time-consuming and costly.

This technology is much easier to implement, but it is not as common as standard euro stacking tote pick wall applications. However, it can be equally beneficial in the right environment.

FAQs

What is a pick wall used for in the food industry?

A pick wall is a modular storage system used in food warehouses, distribution centres and commercial kitchens to organise stock for order picking. It helps staff quickly access ingredients, packaging and packaged food items in a structured, efficient layout.

How does a pick wall improve efficiency in food storage and distribution?

Pick walls streamline the picking process by keeping items clearly separated and easy to locate. This reduces picking errors, speeds up order fulfilment and improves workflow in busy food logistics and production environments.

Are pick walls suitable for chilled and ambient food storage areas?

Yes. Pick walls can be used in both ambient and chilled environments, making them suitable for a wide range of food operations. They help maintain organisation in cold stores, preparation areas and dry goods warehouses.

What should I consider when choosing a pick wall system for a food business?

Consider layout flexibility, load capacity, hygiene requirements and compatibility with your stock types. In food environments, it’s also important to choose durable, easy-to-clean systems that support efficient stock rotation and clear labelling.
