Have you ever noticed some big yellow bins on the roads and pathways when the weather turns frosty in the UK? Those are not your usual bins. Although most road users have already familiarised themselves with these bins and their role in keeping the roads and paths during the freezing weather, most might mistake them for the average bin until they get closer and take a peek. These yellow bins are called grit bins. The local council usually buys them for public use, but you could also buy them.

What are Grit Bins?

Grit bins are large, bright yellow bins usually placed on the side of the road during winter in the UK. The bins are made from heavy-duty plastic. You’ll most likely see them as you drive. Inside, the containers have a combination of salt and grit, hence the name grit bins. The mixture is sprinkled on the roads and pathways to stop the ice from freezing and causing the roads to become slippery. Types of Grit Bins

Blue Grit Bins

Blue grit bins are more accessible to the general public. While the local councils usually purchase the yellow ones, residents, towns and parish councils can buy the blue bins. However, the buyers of the bin have the responsibility of keeping the bin full of salt and sand and using the mixture to spread on the road during severe weather.

The location of the blue grit bins also matters. They must be placed;

Away from hedging. Placing the bins near hedging or vegetation can cause damage from the salt.
They must be at least 1.5 metres away from public footpaths to ensure pedestrians have a clear path
They must not obstruct any road signs or street names.

Household Grit Bins

There are policies against using public grit bins on private properties. Still, you must treat your driveway and pathways around your house or business. This is where household grit bins come in handy.

How to Store a Grit Bin Correctly

It’s a mixture of sodium chloride and other materials like gravel and clay. The mixture is designed to create a saline solution when it comes in contact with the ice to reduce the freezing temperature and cause the existing ice to melt. It also prevents the ice from forming again for a short while.

However, for the rock salt to work effectively, you need to keep it from getting wet too early. If it does, it gets diluted, and it will only be effective when you apply it on the roads and paths. It’s also important to treat the ground at the right time. It should be too early because the mixture will be blown away and not when the surface is already frozen. You should pour it when the road is damp, and the ice is just starting to form.

To keep the grit safe, always keep the lid of the bin closed. If you have a protected area where you can store the grit bin, even better. This will not only protect the grit but also prolong the life of the grit bin by saving it from external elements.
