Bunded Spill Pallet

If you work in an industry that deals with hazardous chemicals, you know how vital correct storage and spill mitigation are. You can’t avoid spills and risks even following best practices. They are a part of the job. What you can do is have an effective way of handling the spills when they happen to protect your business and your workers.

One tool for mitigating and addressing spills is bunded spill pallets. This spill containment system uses heavy-duty pallets with a built-in sump capacity to contain the spilt liquids.

Pallets also have other names, like spill trays. Their purpose is to contain leaks and spillages from IBC tanks, drums, or small containers that sit on them.

Bunded or spill pallets are common and highly useful in the following industries;

Oil and mining
Hospitals
Farms
Mechanics
Construction
Service stations
Food and beverage
Automotive

Benefits of Bunded Pallets

Every business and industry that cares about compliance and safety should consider having bunded pallets in their storage areas. Besides providing a designated storage area for finished products or raw materials, they also offer other benefits like:

Effective spill management

If one of the drums or storage tanks has a spill, you must move quickly to clean things up to prevent contamination. This is even more important if the liquid can harm people, the environment or your flooring. Even non-hazardous liquids can be potentially dangerous by creating slip hazards.

However, it might not be possible to spot a spill immediately. The drum or the tank might leak for a while before you notice the leak, especially if it happens outside working hours when no one is there to inspect the tanks.

When using spill pallets, you don’t have to worry about spotting leaks in good time. A quick inspection of the pallet’s containment area will tell you if any liquid has escaped. The pallets contain the spill automatically, avoiding contamination and slip hazards. They also eliminate the need to clean up the storage area after a spill regularly.

Reduce spill wastage

Bunded pallets do more than mitigate risks and hazards. They can also help in saving costs by reducing spill wastage. If one of the IBC tanks or drums leaks, the spill is contaminated during the clean-up. With the pallets, the leaked liquid can be collected and, where possible, put back in its container or into a new one. If the liquid can be purified and reused, pallets make this possible.

You can move the storage containers more easily

You may need to move your storage tanks and drums to another location within the site or transport them to another location. Moving cylindrical drums and their cylindrical shape requires time and manpower. But bunded pallets come with a standard forklift provision, which makes it possible to lift the container and pallet simultaneously. It’s faster and safer.

Get a more flexible storage solution

You can use bunded pallets to set up a more permanent spill containment and storage system. Bunded pallets can adjust to your needs. They are portable and easy to store when you don’t need to use them and they are stackable, which saves space. In addition, they have a compact and flat design that doesn’t require much storage space. So when your facility doesn’t need the pallets, you can easily put them away and retrieve them the next time you need them.

Reduce risk to staff

Spill pallets allow your facility to handle effectively and contain leaks. The spill is contained within the pallet’s built-in sump for draining later. It reduces the need for your staff to interact directly with the liquids, which is crucial if the liquids are hazardous, creating a safer work environment for your workforce.

Reduce environmental harm

The pallets make it easier to handle spills and manage how and where the liquids are disposed of. Because the liquid doesn’t escape and finds its way to the environment. You protect the surrounding areas.

Remain compliant

Using spill pallets can ensure you remain compliant with local and industrial laws. Some sectors require an effective containment system, especially if you handle hazardous liquids to the environment or the workers. Having bunded pallets ensures you meet regulatory requirements and avoid hefty fines and penalties.

Why You Need to Use Bunded Spill Pallets

If you’re storing oil in containers greater than 200L, you must comply with the bunding and spilling rules. One reason for using bunded spill pallets is that it is a legal requirement. The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations 2001 came into effect on 1 September 2005 and requires anyone storing oil in containers greater than 200L to comply with its rules.

Any type of tank, container, or drum must be bunded to contain leaks. The bund must have a capacity of not less than 110% of the largest container or 25% of their total aggregate storage capacity, whichever is greater.

However, besides being a legal requirement, there are other reasons why you should use our bunded pallets in your commercial operation.

Manage the spill at the source

The easiest way to manage a spill on your warehouse or industry floor is at the source. This prevents further contamination and makes the cleaning process easier. With bunded pallets, you arrest the spill at the source. It makes the cleanup process easier and enhances the safety of the warehouse for the employees.

Contain the spill

Another reason to use bunded pallets is to contain the spills. When buying the pallets, it’s important to pick ones that have sufficient capacity to contain the entire contents of the storage container with some space to spare. This ensures in case of a spill, even if the entire storage container drains. Containing the spill is crucial in preventing further contamination and making the floor safer for use. Containing the spill can also save your operations from prolonged closure as you try to clean up the spill.

Cost Saving

Using bunded pallets can help you save costs. Some spills can be costly to clean and may require extensive intervention and testing to ensure the workplace is safe for employees. The clean-up exercise will not only cause the business serious downtime but also keep the business closed, which could further impact its sales and profitability.

Our bunded pallets are designed to provide the best spill prevention and come in various sizes to suit different needs and business operations. We have bunded spill pallets with capacities from as little as 9 litres up to 1000 litres. You can easily find an option that works for you and can keep up with your needs. The pallets come in different designs and features, including lockable options to prevent unauthorised access to the container.

How to Choose the Correct Spill Pallet for Your Needs

Seeing how vital bunded pallets are, you can afford to take any chances when purchasing them. However, you must ensure you buy the perfect one for your business and applications.

The pallets come in many sizes, types, and designs. So it is easy to find one that matches your needs and requirements. The perfect bunded pallet will depend on several factors, such as:

Your storage requirements

Every factory and industry has its preferred way of storage. You can have your bunded pallets designed to suit your storage preferences. The pallets can be designed to hold a single oil drum or multiple drums or tanks like intermediate bulk containers.

Regulatory requirements

If you’re in a field where bunded pallets are a regulatory requirement, you must only purchase pallets that meet the legal requirements. Some of the legal requirements that might affect the type of pallets you purchase include the DEFRA Control of Pollution England Regulation of 2001. This consideration will ensure the pallets are effective and compliant with the relevant rules.

Movement and transportation

You can choose to have stationary bundled pallets. But if you intend to move the chemicals and the pallets regularly, you should consider buying pallets with relevant provisions to make moving them easier. These include standard forklift provisions that make loading the pallets into trucks easy and fast.

Will the pallets be kept indoors or outdoors?

The nature of the bunded pallets you buy depends on where you intend to store them. If you keep them outside, you will need pallets that can withstand the rain and snow and also enclosed to prevent contact with animals or spilling out in case of rain.

Onit Direct stocks a wide range of bunded pallets to suit various legal and preferential requirements. The pallets come in different capacities to suit private and commercial use.
